He received his footballing education in Penarol’s junior teams, but at the age of 17 moved to Argentina’s Independiente. In was here he made his name, prompting Manchester United to buy him. He lasted only a little longer than two seasons, unable to find his best form and struggling with the pressures of life at Old Trafford. His fortunes changed as he signed for La Liga side Villarreal, where he began to score regularly for the Yellow Submarine – becoming La Liga’s top scorer in 2004-05. This prompted Atletico Madrid to buy him, and Forlan has justified their faith by continuing to be a regular goalscorer, again netting more goals than anyone else in the league in 2008-09, with 32 strikes. This talented marksman was Uruguay’s top scorer in the qualifications with seven goals and yet he still has plenty of critics back home. The doubters argue that Forlan’s best moments tend to come in club football and enjoy pointing out that he was not on target once against South American big boys Argentina and Brazil in qualifying. They also remind anyone who cares to listen that three of his tally came in one match, the 6-0 rout of Peru. However, an international strike-rate of 23 goals in 61 appearances is hardly sub-standard.
