Not comment and become interested in something else. Suggest they don't buy it but ultimately will be out gunned. Tell them it looks great and make notes to buy something else later. Tell them it really doesn't suit them with a "if you buy this i disown you" glare.

Actively seek to argue and disprove the rumour fiercely. Argue and disprove the rumour, only when mentioned to or around you. Get a more influential person to assist in moving attention of you. Make a much worse rumour up, making sure everyone forgets about the rumour about you (which is probably true anyway)
