Originally adapted from Addison Le Boutillier's Pines tile for Grueby Faience Company, Motawi's Pine Landscapes have become one of the Tileworks' signature series. In addition to creating individual Pine Landscape tiles, Motawi has been asked to create Pine Murals of all shapes and sizes for public and private spaces. This lyrical pair was inspired by a lovely book jacket cover by Talwin Morris who designed for English publisher Blackie and Sons in the late 19th century. He was connected with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and designed for many firms. We love the simplicity and elegance of the design --- and the notion of bursting into song. We love this Art Nouveau design for is symmetry and delicacy. It's a bit tricky to glaze, but worth it. To purchase an actual Bleeding Heart tile please visit www.motawi.com
At the studio in Ann Arbor, MI, you'll find that the Tileworks artisans are devoted to the exploration of historic decorative arts. And so it was that Thomas Gelsanliter, co-studio manager and moldmaker, discovered that noted turn-of-the-century English Architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott designed needlepoint patterns for his wife Florence. Isn't it romantic? One of these charming needlepoint designs was the inspiration for this Lovebirds tile. To purchase please visit www.motawi.com
This is one of those pieces of art that grows and grows on you. We've all become very fond of this uncommon bird. And, it's a very good sign that we've been unable to keep him in stock in our studio store during test marketing. Will they just be popular in Ann Arbor? or is there a national attraction to the loon? To purchase please visit www.motawi.com
Our inspiration for this Fuchsia tile design comes directly from one of our favorite people, block print artist Yoshiko Yamamoto. The serated leaves and pendulum shoots are delicate and detailed, yet the design is not at all fussy. We love the restful, simple beauty of this tile. Our customers have requested a Raven for years and at last we have one for them. Again our inspiration comes from the art of Yoshiko Yamamoto. We added a moon to Yoshiko's original Raven design. It added just the flavor we were seeking. To purchase an actual Raven tile please visit www.motawi.com
Adapted from the block print of artist Yoshiko Yamamoto, this Redwood tile captures the essence of the California Redwoods. To purchase an actual Redwoods tile please visit www.motawi.com
Sometimes we will create a custom tile for a client and end up liking it so much that we add it to our own product offering. This little Dragonfly was developed for some friends of ours and is now a part of the tile collections of nature-lovers all across the nation. This tile is taken from an iconic decorative piece: the Gamble House door. There is one particular stained glass panel out of the many on that front door which stands on its own compositionally. We are delighted to re-create that artwork in tile with the cooperation of the Gamble House Museum. To purchase an actual Gamble House tile, please visit www.motawi.com
This design was inspired by a tiny design of a tiny bit of a peacock feather depicted on an Arts & Crafts period vase. Designer Nawal Motawi found that little hint of an idea quite irresistible and this charming tile is the result. To purchase an actual Peacock tile please visit www.motawi.com
This design is our version of a tile made by Flint Faience, an early 20th century Michigan pottery that was attached to an auto parts factory. We love this design for its quirky good looks and for the funky colorways that it inspires. To order an actual Button Basket tile please visit www.motawi.com
